apple strudel

Yesterday evening we decided to prepare a simple and tasty cake, the ‘strudel’. It’s a traditional cake in the north east of Italy (Trentino Alto Adige), but widespread and well known in the world.

The recipe is very easy and fast, here it is!

a pack of puff pastry (I had no time to prepare it so I bought a pack of it)
cinnamon powder (as much as necessary)
50 g of caster sugar
50 g of pine nuts
50 g of butter
3 tablespoons of bread crumbs
2 tablespoons of raisins
2 apples
the grated skin of one lemon

Peel the apples and cut them into slices. Mix the apples with sugar, a little of cinnamon powder, lemon grated skin, raisins and pine nuts.
Melt the butter and preheat the oven at 180 degrees.
Roll out the dough on a baking tray, brush the surface with half of the melted butter and sprinkle itwith bread crumbs.
Cover it with apples mixed with raisins etc. and roll the dough over itself sealing the edges well.
Brush the surface of the roll  with the remaining melted butter and sprinkle with a caster sugar.
Bake the roll in the oven for 25-30 minutes.
You can serve the strudel warm or cold, sprinkled with icing sugar and a ball of gelato!
